How to check your Croatia work permit status

By Bok! · Checked on 30 October 2026

Usually your employer is the applicant, so the official messages go to your employer. Since 4 June 2026 the police send their conclusions, summons and the permit confirmation to the employer's e-Građani inbox. We found no official public status search for workers. Ask your employer, and for the visa, ask the embassy.

Short answer

  • No public search: on the official Croatian sites we checked (MUP, HZZ, gov.hr, MVEP) we found no public page where a worker can check a work permit by passport number.
  • Your employer gets the updates: usually the employer applies, and the HZZ and police messages go to the employer. Since 4 June 2026 the police send their conclusions, summons and the permit confirmation to the employer's e-Građani inbox (Law on Foreigners, art. 91 para 13 and art. 96 para 2).
  • What you can do: ask your employer. When the permit is approved and you apply for the visa, ask the Croatian embassy that covers your country.

Who receives the updates

The labour market test (HZZ)

For a new permit, your employer usually asks the Croatian Employment Service (HZZ) for a labour market test. HZZ tells the employer the result within 15 days (gov.hr; art. 98 para 5). If no suitable worker is found in Croatia, HZZ informs the employer and tells them to apply for the permit within 90 days (HZZ; art. 98 para 6). This notice goes to the employer, not to you.

The e-mail route to the police (MUP)

For some cases without a labour market test, for example an extension, the application goes by e-mail to the police administration or police station. The MUP instruction for employers says:

  • the applicant gets an automatic message that the application was received;
  • the police say within 5 working days if the application must be completed;
  • at the end, the applicant is told by e-mail or phone when and where to collect the permit.

The instruction is written for employers. MUP says that on the routes without a test the worker or the employer can apply at the police. The decision is made by the police administration or police station for the place where the worker lives or will live (gov.hr). If you applied yourself, ask that office.

The same instruction says these police e-mail addresses are only for sending applications. The police cannot answer other questions sent to them.

The e-Građani inbox

Since the changes to the Law on Foreigners in Narodne novine 55/2026 (in force from 4 June 2026, art. 70), the police send conclusions and summons to the employer in electronic form, to the employer's user inbox in the e-Građani system (art. 91 para 13). The confirmation with the permit details (art. 91 paras 3 and 4) also goes to that inbox (art. 96 para 2). If the employer is a temporary work agency, these articles also name the company the worker is sent to (the "user" under art. 100). These articles do not say that the worker gets these messages.

What to ask your employer

  • On what date did you send the complete application?
  • Which route was it: online through HZZ, or by e-mail or in person at the police?
  • Did the police ask for more documents, or send a conclusion or summons to your e-Građani inbox?
  • Is the permit approved, and can you send me the confirmation?

Why the date matters: for an Article 97 permit applied for from 4 June 2026, the police must decide "as soon as possible", at the latest within 90 days of a complete application, test included. In exceptional, complex cases it can be 30 days longer, but not for seasonal work (art. 91 paras 8 and 9). Applications from before 4 June 2026 follow the old rules (NN 55/2026 art. 68). The visa stage

After the permit is approved, you apply for a D visa at the Croatian embassy or consulate, or at a VFS Global centre (MVEP). For questions about your visa application, contact the mission that covers your country:

  • India and Nepal: the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia in New Delhi, croemb.new-delhi@mvep.hr (MVEP).
  • The Philippines: the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia in Jakarta, Indonesia, jakarta@mvep.hr. MVEP also lists honorary consulates in Manila and Cebu.

The list of VFS centres that the Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes includes India, Nepal and the Philippines.

[UNVERIFIED, checked 30 Oct 2026: we could not confirm on VFS's official Croatia pages whether VFS offers tracking of a Croatian visa application. Ask the visa centre or the embassy.]

"Check by passport number" sites

The official sources we checked list no website where you check a Croatian work permit by passport number. Our advice: do not enter your passport number or other personal data on unofficial sites that offer this, and take your information from mup.gov.hr, hzz.hr, gov.hr, mvep.gov.hr, your employer or the embassy.

Where the Croatian language requirement fits

From 4 June 2027, if you have lived in Croatia for at least one year on such a permit, you must add proof of A1.1 Croatian, a beginner level of Croatian, to your application for an extension or a new permit (art. 92.a paras 1 and 6; art. 70). Read A1.1 Croatian exam for your work permit, or start with Croatian language for beginners.
